Tag: Telling People

One of the things I’ve been struggling with over the last while is whether or not to tell people I’m having weight loss surgery.

Some days I think I should just be open about it. After all, everyone can see that I’m an obese man, and they’re probably going to notice if I suddenly lose a lot of weight.

But I also worry about people judging me – especially those that have never had a weight management issue of their own – because they can’t really empathise with the situation. I’m concerned that they would think that I should just go on a diet, and I’d be fine.

And I don’t want every conversation to be about me trying to educate people about weight problems, and justifying my decision to take a surgical route. It would be exhausting trying to win everyone over.

So I’ve taken a bit of a reserved stance for now. I’ve told family and very close friends about it, as I know they love me and will support me. However for other friends and colleagues I’ve just said that I’m going into hospital for surgery next week and will be out of action for a few weeks after. I figured that if they asked, I would be honest and tell them. But you know what? None of them have asked so far – either through politeness, respect for my privacy, or maybe they just don’t care?
